The Ignatian Year

What is an Ignatian Year?

From May 2021 until July 2022, the Society of Jesus celebrates an Ignatian Year. What is an Ignatian Year? May 20, 2021 marks the 500th anniversary of St. Ignatius’ conversion – that fateful day when Ignatius the soldier, struck by a cannonball, began his transformation into Ignatius the pilgrim. How might we grow in our relationship with God and our love for one another by meditating on this important moment in Ignatius’ life?

God continues to invite each of us into a deepening relationship, to ongoing conversion. We believe that by embracing this invitation, we embrace our God who calls us to act in new, bold ways that reconcile our world, bringing about justice, peace and compassion. For this Ignatian Year, we ask for the grace to see all things new in Christ.

How might we commit to ongoing conversion? How might we learn to recognize and embrace those “cannonball moments” in our own lives?

— Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Society of Jesus

How might the cannonballs in your life be shattering obstacles that stand between you and God? How might these cannonballs be showing you the way of Christ, that of downward mobility, that way that embraces poverty, humility and rejection?

[20 May] Begin the Ignatian year with a special 1-hour event organized by the London Jesuit Centre: « Bowled over: Ignatius, the Cannonball and God »

To mark the anniversary, Fr Adrian Porter sj offers a reflection on that event, on the way it played out in Ignatius’ mind, leading to his conversion and a whole new way of relating to God. No prior knowledge of St Ignatius or his spirituality is required. All are welcome.

  • Dates: Thursday 20th May 2021 at 7.00-8.00pm
  • Level: Open to all
