International Women's Rights Day

8 March is not Woman's Day !

Indeed, it is a mistake to call this day that. Firstly, because there is no such thing as “the woman”, there are diverse, varied women, each one unique and not a stereotype or an essence of the feminine. Secondly, because it is not a day to celebrate women and then forget about them !

The real title of this day is : International Women’s Rights Day

It is therefore a day of action, awareness and mobilisation dedicated to the fight for women’s rights, equality and justice for women. Some figures to describe this inequality in the world :

*Men hold 50% more wealth than women

*61% of the poorest people are women

*Only 18% of ministers and 24% of parliamentarians are women

*In 24 countries around the world, women need permission from their husbands or guardians to work

*Women do more than ¾ of the unpaid domestic work

*2/3 of illiterates are women

*129.2 million girls are not in school

*1/3 of women have suffered physical or sexual violence in their lifetime

One way to experience this day is to focus on a particular woman. Our site focuses on one of them: Dorothy Day (1897-1980)

Dorothy Day was an activist who worked for such social causes as pacifism and women’s suffrage through the prism of the Catholic Church. The movement she created continues to thrive to this day, with more than 200 communities across the United States and another 28 communities abroad.

In 2015, Pope Francis called her out as one of “four great Americans,” along with Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and Thomas Merton.
