What is Advent and why do christians keep this season ?
"The coming of Christ"
Advent (from the Latin Adventus,”coming”) in the Christian Church, is a time of preparation for celebrating the birth of Christ at Christmas. This season of Advent anticipates the “coming of Christ” from three different perspectives: the physical nativity in Bethlehem, the reception of Christ in the heart of the believer, and the eschatological Second Coming.
We can all get caught up preparing for Christmas with the hustle and bustle of shopping, Christmas parties, etc. without any real reflection on why we are celebrating Christmas. As someone once said, if we are not careful ‘ Christ will be taken out of Christmas’ all too sadly we can see this in our society. Advent, is a time that can help us to prepare and reflect on Christmas and all that means for us. However, we have to make and take time for this preparation.
