International Women’s Day: 8 March

History of Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

Since those early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women’s movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women’s conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women’s rights and participation in the political and economic arenas.

Officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe.

We invite you to learn about the history of women’s rights and the UN’s contribution to the cause.

“Supporting and enabling autonomy”

As I reflect on International Women’s Day which will be celebrated on March 8th across the world, I am very conscious of the different ways in which women have the opportunities to celebrate and join in this day. Many in their own countries, but also a vast majority of women have had to flee their countries and find themselves as migrants, seeking asylum or refugees if they have been accepted into a country.

Listening to the different stories and experiences of some women, that I am privileged to meet at The South London Refugee Association (SLRA) where I volunteer one morning a week, I am aware of the strength and resilience of many of these women and also their fragility and vulnerability.

International Women's Day: 8 March

SLRA is for everyone, women, men, children, youth. However, the Women’s Group is particular to women, supporting, encouraging and empowering them, through the different sessions and activities.

We have speakers on various topics, yoga, relaxation exercises and much more. Some weeks, I do some meditation, obviously in a multi-faith context.

A quote below about the Women’s Group at SLRA :

“Our thriving, weekly Women’s Group offers empowering sessions for women by women! Join us for creative activities, regular sessions on mental health and community activism & make new friends! Thursday mornings, 10:30am – 1:30pm including a free Community Lunch at the Woodlawns Centre.”
